Knee and joint pain can come from an acute injury such as a meniscal or ligament tear, from overuse, or from chronic conditions like osteoarthritis, bursitis, and tendonitis. Care begins with a thorough evaluation, including diagnostic imaging such as X-ray or MRI when it is needed to understand the extent of the problem. From there the team builds a conservative, non-surgical plan focused on easing pain and helping the joint move and recover. Early care often includes rest, activity changes, and bracing or taping to support the joint, along with a range of physical therapy options. The physical therapy options available include myofascial release, cold laser therapy, ultrasound therapy, therapeutic massage, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), electrical muscle stimulation and interferential electrotherapy (EMS/IF), and extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT), along with KT taping and exercises to stretch and strengthen the surrounding tissues. Where appropriate, the team may also work with joint or muscle injections, or platelet-rich plasma (PRP), to support the body’s healing.
